From the first time I picked up a camera, I have enjoyed taking pictures of people. When asked to make a series showing how I see the world, I knew I wanted to incorporate my love of portraits. In looking through my old photos, I came to the conclusion that I see the world as something that is mutable; it’s what you make of it. Everyone sees the world differently because how we process information and what we focus on is dependent on what matters to each individual. At the same time, there is a touch of irreverence to how I see the world. What means the most to me are the people I love and finding humor in the random.
Every photographer affects their pictures through their choices, and their individual touch, but I wanted to take it a step further and literally show my hand manipulating the image. I’m sure everyone has taken a picture of a sunset, but have they tried to squish the sun? How will someone react if you stick a leaf up their nose while taking a picture of them? What do the people around you think if you’re at the beach, and you stick your foot up at the scene you are taking a picture of? When we view a picture, we know what’s in front, but we don’t know what’s happening behind the camera. A normal photograph leaves the interpretation of the image up to the viewer, but what I want to do is show what I see, and make the viewer see the same strange in the beauty.
